British Teen Hits The Bollywood Big Time
A British beauty queen has described her life as “surreal” after landing the lead role in a Bollywood film and becoming a star in India.
Amy Jackson, 18, was discovered after director AL Vijay spotted her picture on the website for the Miss England competition.
Within a week, she had travelled from her home in Liverpool to India to play the part of Amy Wilkinson in the movie Madrasapattinam, a period drama set in the late 1940s.
The teenager, a former winner of Miss Teen World, told Sky News she had never even acted before.
“I’ve done drama and acting classes in school but nothing on the scale of a movie,” she said.
Madrasapattinam topped the Bollywood box office when it was released in India in July, making Amy an instant celebrity.
“I am getting fan mail from 200 people a day,” she said.
“We did a tour in southern India last week to see the response of the audience. It was absolutely brilliant.
“There were thousands waiting outside the cinema and I don’t know how many autographs I signed.
“It’s surreal. Over here, I’m just a normal teenage girl but over there, I’ve turned into a big star.”
Madrasapattinam is being released in the UK next week and Amy is attending the UK premiere at Woolton Picture House in her home city later.
The teen star told Sky News she has another five films in the pipeline, although she is hoping for success in next month’s Miss England competition first.
