TV Analyst Suspended For On-Air Obama Insult

A political analyst who used foul language to describe US President Barack Obama on national television has been suspended.

MSNBC’s Mark Halperin was on the channel’s Morning Joe programme talking about the President’s statement on the budget a day earlier.

He first asked: “Are we on the seven-second delay today?”

But then he added: “I think he [Obama] was kind of a d*** yesterday.”

When he realised his remark had not been bleeped out by the show’s producers, he quickly apologised.

But the network went ahead and suspended the analyst indefinitely as punishment for the on-air blunder.

It said in a statement: “Mark Halperin’s comments were completely inappropriate and unacceptable.

“We apologise to the President, the White House and all of our viewers. We strive for a high level of discourse and comments like these have no place on our air.”

During his news conference, Mr Obama compared Senate Republicans to lazy schoolchildren as he urged Congress to move on with federal budget and deficit legislation.

Mr Halperin said in a statement that he agreed with his suspension, describing it as “totally appropriate”.

He said: “My remark was unacceptable and I deeply regret it.”

MSNBC has suspended other members of staff in the past, including talk show host Keith Olbermann last year for compaign donations to Democrats.
