Mum Who Left Kids In Hot Car Spared Jail
A mother has been given a 12-month community order after leaving her children in a “dangerously” hot car for 45 minutes while she went to a pawnbrokers.
Kelly Langham, 26, admitted leaving the three children – aged between two and eight – in the car on Chapel Street, Carlisle, while she went to Cash Generator.
Carlisle Magistrates’ Court heard that a local resident raised the alarm after hearing the repeated sound of a car horn.
When Langham returned to the car, she told arresting officers she had only planned to be away for five minutes but had got caught up in a queue.
In a police interview she said her oldest child had been feeling unwell so had stayed off school that day.
She had also kept her other child off school.
Langham also told officers she had taken amphetamine earlier that morning and that she had become dependent on the drug.
She pleaded guilty to three counts of wilful child neglect and also one count possession of amphetamine.
She was told to go on a six-month drug rehabilitation course.
