Pervert jailed for 14 years
A GORSE Hill man who waged a ‘campaign of sexual abuse’ against two young girls has been jailed for 14 years.
Duncan Smith, 64, began preying on one victim when she was just six-years-old and later raped her.
When she eventually managed to escape his clutches, Smith turned his attentions to another young girl.
Smith was convicted at Minshull Street Crown Court, Manchester of 12 sexual offences and one offence of cruelty against a child – after he forced a young boy to eat a packet of cigerettes.
The court heard that Smith, of Beresford Road, showed the older girl pornographic films and asked her to perform sex acts on him.
She was left in pain by his asault and was sobbing.
She eventually moved out of the area aged 13, but Smith turned his attention to another girl of the same age.
During the same period of time, Smith caught a boy aged between 12 and 14 smoking – and as punishment he forced him to smoke a whole packet before eating another.
Sentencing Judge Jeffrey Lewis said it was a “campaign of sexual abuse”.
The judge told Smith: “Your sexual abuse towards your first victim was a betrayal of her innocence, a betrayal of her dignity.”
Smith was also disqualified from working with children and made the subject of a Sexual Offence Prevention Order, preventing him from having any unsupervised contact with a child under 16 in the future.
Outside court, Detective Constable Angela Bailey said: “I hope today’s sentence highlights that any sexual offence, no matter when it is committed, is a matter for the police and we take all reports very seriously.
“Victims of childhood sexual abuse often feel that they should not report it because of the length of time that has passed since it happened.
“This is categorically not the case. Abuse which takes place during childhood can cause untold damage in later life and I want people to be assured that should you report an incident of historic abuse to us, it will be fully investigated in a sensitive manner by specially-trained police officers.”
