Russell Brand issued a statement on Friday announcing he and Katy Perry have ended their marriage of 14 months. Rumours of problems have been doing the rounds for the last couple of months.

Russell filed for divorce on the grounds of “irreconcilable differences,” TMZ reports.

He released a statement saying: “Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I’ll always adore her and I know we’ll remain friends.”

Both Russell and Katy had publicly denied divorce rumours over the last month.

During an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, Russell insisted he was “happily married.” He added: “I’m married to Katy. Perpetually, until death do us part was the pledge.”

Katy took to Twitter to say: “First I’m pregnant & then I’m divorced. What am I All My Children?!”

The couple got new tattoos together and engaged in a PDA at a benefit at the beginning of December.

However, the rumour mill went into overdrive when they were 7,000 miles apart at Christmas.

They had planned to spend the festive season all together with their families in London, but Katy was spotted with friends in Hawaii and Russell was in Cornwall with David Baddiel. Both had taken off their wedding rings.

A source told Us Weekly: “They had a massive fight. She was like, ‘F*** you. I’m going to do my own thing.’ Russell replied, ‘Fine, f*** you too.’”

Katy and Russell started dating after the MTV VMAs in September 2009, and Russell proposed on New Year’s Eve in India. They married in India on October 23, 2010.
