The five youngsters – aged between 13 and 15 when the alleged abuse began – were thought to have been “passed around” among a group of men in Rochdale and sometimes subjected to violence.

A jury at Liverpool Crown Court has been told that one of the girls became pregnant at the age of 13 and had to have an abortion.

The court heard another girl “very quickly became regularly and heavily drunk, depressed, incapable of getting herself out of the situation and resigned to what was happening to her”.

Prosecutor Rachel Smith said: “She did not always cry or protest or tell the men that she did not want to have sex with them although she often did both.

“But she was persistently coerced or forced into submission by them.”

Another girl, who had absconded from a council care home, said she was sexually exploited by large numbers of men and given “substantial amounts of alcohol such that she was severely drunk when she was used for sex”.

She said: “They just get you proper hammered so that you can’t do anything.”

She claimed that she would regularly find herself drunk to near unconsciousness, waking up with men having sex with her.

She also claimed that one man would pull her hair and grab her neck if she resisted and had threatened to cut her with a razor blade if she refused to have sex with him.

The girl was eventually removed from the area and accommodated in the south of England after social workers had become aware of the extent of the alleged offences.

The court was told that the case followed an investigation by Greater Manchester Police with the first arrest in 2008 and the final one in 2011.

The jury heard police missed an opportunity to intervene earlier when one of the alleged victims disclosed what had happened but officers decided at that stage not to take the matter further.

The defendants are Kabeer Hassan (25), Abdul Aziz (41), Abdul Rauf (43), Mohammed Sajid (35), Adil Khan (42), Abdul Qayyum (43), Mohammed Amin (44), Qamar Shazad (29), Liaquat Shah (41) and Hamid Safi (22).

Another defendant cannot be named for legal reasons. All deny the charges against them.

Many other men, who have not been identified by the police, are said to have been involved in the exploitation. The trial continues

The singer was seen standing outside the New Hope Baptist Church with his family and wife Alicia Etheridge, before getting into a car and driving off.

It is reported that at least seven of the late singer’s songs are to enter the UK Top 40 on Sunday.

Houston died on Saturday at the age of 48. The singing sensation, who sold over 170 million albums, singles and videos worldwide during her five-decade-long music career, is to be buried on Saturday in the church where she sang as a youngster.

It was one of the world’s worst prison fires and was apparently started by one of the inmates late on Tuesday night at the jail in Comayagua, about 75 km (45 miles) north of the capital Tegucigalpa.

By the end of it, 359 people were dead, said Danelia Ferrera, a senior official at the attorney general’s office.

“It’s a terrible scene … Our staff went into the cells and the bodies are charred, most of them are unrecognizable,” Ferrera told Reuters, adding officials would have to use dental records and DNA in many cases to identify those killed.

A convict was suspected of starting the blaze, said the governor of Comayagua province, Paola Castro.

“One inmate got in touch with me just after 11 p.m. to say another inmate had set fire to the prison in block number 6, presumably by setting fire to a mattress,” she said, noting she had met the prisoner during her social work at the prison.

Jails are stuffed full of convicts in Honduras, which is ravaged by violent street gangs, brutal drug traffickers and rampant poverty. According to the United Nations, the country has the highest murder rate in the world.

Violence on the streets is mirrored by frequent riots and deadly clashes between rival gangs behind bars.

But the carnage in the Comayagua prison was shocking even by Honduran standards. Chaos erupted after the blaze took hold.

“We heard screaming from the people who caught on fire,” one prisoner told reporters, showing fingers he fractured escaping the blaze. “We had to push up the roof panels to get out.”

Injured inmates were filmed being carried out of the jail, some crawling with visible burns.

By the time Red Cross volunteer Jose Manuel Gomez arrived, all he could do for many was gather up their remains.

“We’re placing them into bags in parts because when we grab them, they disintegrate,” he said.

The inferno was the third major prison fire in Honduras since 2003 with dilapidated jails packed at more than double their capacity across the Central American nation.

Worried and angry relatives surrounded the prison on Wednesday morning, at one point throwing rocks at police and trying to force their way inside the prison.

Police responded by firing shots into the air and shooting tear gas at protesters, most of whom were women.

President Porfirio Lobo said he had suspended the director of the Comayagua prison and the head of the national prison system to ensure a thorough investigation.

He promised to “take urgent measures to deal with this tragedy, which has plunged all Hondurans into mourning.”

Police reported that one of the dead was a woman who had stayed overnight at the prison and the rest were inmates, but noted some of those presumed dead could have escaped.

VIOLENT GANGS, DRUGS

Honduras’ violent street gangs, known as ‘maras’, gained power inside Hispanic neighbourhoods in the United States in the 1980s and then spread down into Central America. Their members wear distinctive tattoos and are involved in drugs and weapons trafficking, armed robbery and protection rackets.

A local police chief read out the names of 457 survivors outside the prison on Wednesday, but relatives still clamoured for more information.

“This is desperate, they won’t tell us anything and I think my husband is dead,” a crying Gregoria Zelaya told Canal 5 TV as she stood by a chain link fence.

Officials are still investigating the cause. They said earlier on Wednesday that a short circuit might have been behind the blaze at the Comayagua prison, which housed more than 850 inmates, well above its limit of around 500.

The country’s penitentiaries are meant to hold 6,000 but the prison population is more than 12,500.

In 2003, a fire broke out after a riot in another prison in northern Honduras, killing 68 people. A scandal ensued when an investigation found that police and prison staff had shot and stabbed inmates in the melee.

The government pledged to improve the crumbling prison system but just a year later more than 100 prisoners were killed in a fire in San Pedro Sula. Survivors of that blaze said guards fired on inmates trying to escape or left them locked up to die.

Honduras had more than 80 homicides per 100,000 people in 2009, a rate 16 times that of the United States, according to a United Nations report last year. A slow and inefficient justice system has stretched jails to bursting point.

The country is a major narcotics trafficking transit point for South American cocaine moving north to consumers in the United States, and authorities say they are grappling with a growing presence of violent Mexican drug cartels.

A political crisis ripped through Honduras in mid-2009 when a widely-condemned coup toppled the democratically elected president but the country has been trying to heal divisions since Lobo was elected later that year.

The ‘Look To You’ singer had been in the bathroom getting ready for the Clive Davis annual pre-Grammy Awards party yesterday, when her hairdresser and two bodyguards who were in the bedroom, began to worry when she had been in there for an hour.

Sources have told us that when they began knocking on the door and there was no answer, the female hairdresser entered and screamed when she saw Whitney’s face underwater.

Apparently, her body was slumped as though she had slid down the back of the bath.

One of the bodyguards went in and pulled her body out of the water and attempted to resuscitate her, but to no avail. After calling the hotel security, the paramedics were called and she was pronounced dead at 3:55pm.

It was previously reported that prescription pills were found in the hotel room, fuelling the theory that she had taken the medication causing her to fall into a heavy sleep in the bath.

When doctors finally pronounced Holden out of danger on Wednesday, her representative confirmed the birth of healthy Hollie Rose to the Daily Mail newspaper.

The girl is the second daughter for Holden, 40, and her husband Chris Hughes – she gave birth to Alexa Louise six years ago.

The star’s rep says, “Hollie Rose Hughes was born on 23 January 2012. She is healthy… but Amanda has been in a critical condition for the past three days. She is now stable and we expect her to make a full recovery very soon.”

Holden suffered a miscarriage in 2010 and a stillbirth last year.

When Tori LaConsay took the time to paint a sweet message on a neighbourhood sign she had no idea a lookalike design would end up plastered over merchandise on the retailer’s website.

In December 2008 Tori, from The East Village neighbourhood in Atlanta, Georgia painted ‘You Look Nice Today’ with a love heart on one side of a road sign so people could see it as they travelled past.

Unexpectedly, Tori received messages from friends recently with links to the UK H&M website showing her design on doormats, pillowcases and towels with no accreditation.

Canadian Leonard Thompson marked a medical breakthrough to which a million diabetics in the UK owe their lives.

Before insulin was developed, a diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes led to a quick death, often within weeks or days.

But a discovery by Dr Frederick Banting and his assistant Charles Best in Canada during the summer of 1921 marked a dramatic new approach to treating the disease.

Banting and Best were able to isolate material from pancreas extracts to prolong the lives of diabetic dogs.

And in 1922, the pair treated their first human patient, the young Leonard, who had lay dying in Toronto General Hospital.

In the UK, author and diabetic HG Wells wrote to The Times in 1934 to encourage widespread use of insulin.

He said he was forming “a Diabetic Association open ultimately to all diabetics, rich or poor, for mutual aid and assistance, and to promote the study, the diffusion of knowledge, and the proper treatment of diabetes in this country”. This was the origin of the charity Diabetes UK.

Around 300,000 people in the UK have Type 1 diabetes, which usually develops under the age of 40 and requires daily insulin injections.

Police in Brazil have confirmed that they have started an investigation and carried out a search of the studios in Rio de Janerio.

Their actions come after footage appeared to show 31-year-old housemate Daniel Echaniz force himself upon student Monique Amin, 23, who had reportedly passed out following a party.

Forecasters have said that dry, bright and cold weather will return on Friday and last until Tuesday bringing temperatures as low as -6°C with the north east and north west expected to feel the bite the most.

The sub-zero termpatures will bring sharp overnight frosts with lows of -6°C to -4°C in rural spots predicted. Even urban areas like London are expected to feel temperatures as low as -2°C.

The cold will also bring freezing mist and fog patches overnight which will most likely clear away by morning, according to the Met Office.

Daytime temperatures will also take a tumble to 4°C in the north and 7°C in the south – a significant drop from the highest recent temperature 13.7°C recorded in Monmouthshire, south east Wales, on Thursday.

A level 2 Cold Weather Alert was issued by the Met Office this morning for the whole country.

“There is a 80% probability of severe cold weather between 00:00 on Saturday and 09:00 on Monday in parts of England. This weather could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services.

“A marked temperature change into the weekend as high pressure brings settled but cold conditions. This looks set to persist into next week and the warning is expected to be extended over the coming days.”

Brave passer-by Michael Ritson stood in front of Steven Black’s Ford Focus when it looked like he was driving away after a collision with a motorbike on the Felling bypass last March.

But instead of slowing his car down, Black ploughed into the 33-year-old, who was returning home to Jarrow from a day trip with his family, leaving him with fatal injuries.

Black, 27, was initially charged with manslaughter, which carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

But at Newcastle Crown Court today, prosecutors accepted his guilty plea to the lesser charge of causing death by dangerous driving, which carries a maximum of 14 years.

Adjourning sentence, the judge told Black, of The Riding, Kenton, Newcastle: “As you know, a significant sentence of imprisonment is going to be passed in this case. Your application for bail is refused.”

Erin Langworthy, 22, said that it was a “miracle” that she survived after her 111-metre jump over the Zambezi River, between Zimbabwe and Zambia, went awry. Langworthy was nearing the bottom when her cord snapped, plummeting her into crocodile-infested waters. Submerged into the raging rapids, Langworthy had to struggle to keep her head above water in the accident that was caught on video.

Her situation was made even worse by the fact that her feet were still tied, making escape from the water even tougher. The snapped rope had also followed Erin Langworthy into the water.

“It went black straight away and I felt like I’d been slapped all over,” she told Australia’s Channel Nine.

“The water was going quite quickly and then I started to hear the roaring. It’s like being in waves, you get sucked under and then you pop up so it’s very disorienting, I didn’t know which was up or down.”

Langworthy eventually managed to climb out of the water on the Zimbabwean side of the river after a lengthy ordeal. “It was quite scary because a couple of times the rope actually got caught on some rocks or debris,” she said. “I actually had to swim down and yank the bungee cord out of whatever it was caught on to make it to the surface. It’s definitely a miracle that I survived.”

As London’s Oxford Street bustled on the first day of the post-Christmas sales, a fight broke out in its Foot Locker store, leading to the teenager’s death.

Hours later a second stabbing took place on the same street just a few hundred yards away, leaving a man with leg wounds. It is not known if the incidents are linked.

Police said they have recovered a number of weapons from the first crime scene and arrested 10 people. A white tent had been erected in the street a few yards from the entrance to the Foot Locker store.

The teenager was stabbed after a fight broke out between two groups of youths. Stunned shoppers looked on as the fight spilled out into the street. The 18-year-old victim was from south London. Police would not comment on speculation that the row was over a pair of trainers.

They said the fight had broken out after the youths began “arguing” in the shop.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Dunne, the senior investigating officer from the Metropolitan Police’s Homicide Command, said: “There appears to have been two groups of young people opposing each other and involved in this incident. It would appear at this stage there was a weapon involved that may well have been a knife but I can’t confirm that yet.”

Mr Dunne said the incident took place “in close proximity to the entrance to the store, if not within” the store, adding: “This is probably the busiest place in the United Kingdom right now on the busiest shopping day so it’s been difficult for us to piece together what has happened and clear this area to do the job we are paid to do and work out a sequence of events here.

“The flipside of that is we have probably more witnesses than we would normally have and I’m very much looking forward to them coming and speaking to us.”

A crime scene has been set up which runs from Duke Street to New Bond Street, near Bond Street underground station.

The 5.0 magnitude tremor, which was 7.6 kilometres (4.7 miles) deep, struck early Saturday 6:37 am local time, just 21 kilometres (13 miles) from the earthquake-devastated city of Christchurch.

It heralds a tense Christmas holiday for Christchurch residents after the city was rocked by a fresh series of powerful earthquakes on Friday, bringing back painful memories of the February disaster.

Two shallow quakes of magnitude 5.8 and 5.9 and a series of aftershocks struck as malls were packed with afternoon Christmas shoppers, sending stock tumbling from the shelves and turning the festive mood to panic.

The quakes, which temporarily closed the international airport and disrupted communications, were the latest in a series that began 15 months ago and have destroyed much of the inner city.

Local news media reported people fleeing in fear as the quake and a first wave of aftershocks rattled the city, leading to liquefaction and flooding in some suburbs worst hit by previous earthquakes.

Liquefaction is caused when shaking loosens the bonds between soil particles, turning the ground into a quagmire.

“You can’t underestimate the ongoing stress this has created for people,” Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker said, while Prime Minister John Key described the impact as “frightening and disheartening” for the beleaguered residents.

The lives of people in New Zealand’s second largest city have been shattered by the earthquakes that began in September last year when a 7.0 tremor struck.

That quake caused widespread destruction but because it hit just before dawn there were few casualties.

But on February 22, a lunchtime 6.3 quake killed 181 people and reduced much of the downtown area, including the city’s Anglican cathedral, to rubble, while in the suburbs thousands of homes were damaged or destroyed.

The cost of repairing the city has been put at NZ$20 billion ($15.5 billion), and even after the latest quakes Key said the government’s resolve to rebuild Christchurch remains unchanged.

Smaller earthquakes in the 3.0-4.0 range have become an almost daily occurrence in Christchurch but only a few thousand from a population of more than 350,000 people are reported to have left the city.

Deputy mayor Ngaire Button said the latest quakes coming at the end of a difficult year, were likely to prompt more people to consider leaving the city but she doubted many would go.

“Every aftershock we’ve had, there have been people who have felt that way, we can’t blame them for that,” she said.

One woman, Susan Holmes, told TV3 she was “sick” of the repeated tremors and threats to her home.

“It’s beyond devastating, It’s happened again. I’m sick of it,” a sobbing Holmes said as she faced the prospect of clearing debris from her home for the fourth time in 16 months.

The US Geological Survey said a 5.8-magnitude quake struck at 1:58 pm (0058 GMT) Friday at a depth of less than five kilometres (three miles). It was followed 70 minutes later by a 5.9 tremor at about the same depth.

One person was rushed to hospital after being injured in a shopping mall and the National Crisis Management Centre was activated.

Civil Defence controller David Coetzee said the toll could have been much higher had the central business district not been cordoned off after earlier quakes.

Telephone services were cut in many areas and electricity supplies disrupted, but police said there were no reports of other injuries or widespread damage.

The international airport and shopping malls were all evacuated and closed as a precautionary measure.

In a project known as Spaceguard, the U.S. space agency was ordered by Congress in 1998 to find 90 percent of objects near Earth that are 1 km (0.62 of a mile) in diameter or larger.

The survey is now complete, with 93 percent of the objects accounted for, astronomer Amy Mainzer of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, said at the American Geophysical Union conference in San Francisco on Tuesday.

Using NASA’s recently retired Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) telescope, scientists also found about 20,500 smaller asteroids near Earth.

Previous studies estimated there were 36,000 to 100,000 of these objects, which have a diameter of about 100 meters (110 yards).

“They could still pack quite a punch,” Mainzer told Reuters, adding that “any impact is not a very likely event.”

But a major asteroid strike could and has happened.

An asteroid or comet between 5 and 10 km (3.1 and 6.2 miles) in diameter is believed to have smashed into Earth some 65 million years ago, triggering global climate changes that led to the extinction of dinosaurs and other animals.

“We know something that big could wipe out mostly all life on Earth,” Mainzer said.

Scientists are now using archived WISE observations to home in on potentially hazardous objects whose orbits come within about 4.6 million miles (7.4 million km) of Earth.

So far, there is no plan about what to do if an asteroid was discovered to be on a collision course with Earth.

Carmen was 17 years old when her parents decided to move to Indiana. Her father had lost his job and the only way he could find new employment was by moving to a new state. The relocation caused a lot of problems for Carmen. She had to leave her friends behind and attend a whole new school in Indiana.

Carmen had a hard time making friends when she changed schools. It was the middle of the school year and most of the students had no interest in befriending the new girl. Initially, she spent many days alone, walking from class to class without speaking to anyone, but she eventually started hanging around with a group of five other girls. Carmen thought these girls were her friends, but it wasn’t long before she discovered that they had been talking about her behind her back and spreading vile rumors.

When she confronted them, the girls turned on her and began bullying her every day, making her life a misery. They started out calling her names, but then the bullying got much worse. One day, she left her school books in the classroom at break time. When she returned, she found someone had taken a sharpie and written dirty words all over her books. Another day, she opened her bag and discovered someone had poured yoghurt all over the insides. Sometimes, she would come to school and find her locker had been vandalized. The final straw came when she put on her coat at recess and found that someone had stuffed dog poop in her pockets.

There and then, Carmen decided that she couldn’t take the bullying any longer. She planned to stay behind, that evening, after school, and tell her teacher what had been happening. Unfortunately, her decision came too late to save her life.

After lunch, her teacher announced that the school was holding a fire drill. When the alarm sounded, Carmen and the other students filed out of the classroom and assembled in the yard outside. As the teachers read out the roll call, the gang of five girls decided that this was a great opportunity to embarrass Carmen in front of the whole school during the fire drill. They moved over to where Carmen was standing, near a sewer drain, and began crowding the poor girl, getting in her face and nudging her towards the open manhole.

They pushed her and she tripped over and fell head-first down the manhole. When they saw her falling, the girls started giggling and when Carmen’s name was called out, they shouted “She’s down in the sewer!”

All of the other students began laughing. But when the teachers looked down the manhole and saw Carmen’s body lying at the bottom in the muck and the poop, the laughter abruptly stopped. Her head was twisted around at an odd angle and her face was covered in blood. Worse still, she wasn’t moving.

There was nothing any of the teachers could do for her. Carmen was dead. When the police arrived and went down into the sewer, they determined that she had broken her neck. Her face had been torn off when she hit the ladder on the way down and her neck snapped when she landed on her head on the concrete at the bottom.

The police hauled Carmen’s body out of the sewer and sent her to the mortuary. Everyone had to stay behind after school while the police questioned all of Carmen’s classmates. The five girls lied to the police, saying they had witnessed Carmen falling down the sewer. The police believed the girls and Carmen Winstead’s death was ruled an accident and the case was closed. Everyone thought that was the last they would hear of Carmen Winstead, but they were wrong.

Months later, Carmen’s classmates began receiving strange e-mails on their MySpaces. The e-mails were titled “They Pushed Her” and claimed that Carmen hadn’t really fallen down the sewer, she had been pushed. The e-mails also warned that the guilty people should own up and take responsibility for their crime. If they didn’t there would be horrible consequences. Most people dismissed the e-mails as a hoax, but others were not so sure.

A few days later, one of the girls who pushed Carmen down the sewer was at home taking a shower, when she heard a strange cackling laugh. It seemed to be coming from the drain. The girl started to freak out and ran out of the bathroom. That night, the girl said goodnight to her mom and went to sleep.

Five hours later, her mom was awoken in the middle of the night, by a loud noise that resounded throughout the house. She ran into her daughter’s room, only to find it empty. There was no trace of the girl. The worried mother called the police and when they arrived, they conducted a search of the area. Eventually, they discovered the girl’s grisly remains.

Her corpse was lying in the sewer, covered in muck and poop. Her neck was broken and her face was missing. It had been completely torn off. One by one, all of the girls who pushed Carmen that day were found dead. They had all been killed in exactly the same way and were all found at exactly the same spot. In the sewer at the bottom of the same uncovered manhole where Carmen had met her doom.

But the killing didn’t stop there. More and more of Carmen’s former classmates were found dead. It seemed that anyone who didn’t believe that Carmen had been pushed, was eventually found down in the sewer with their necks broken and their faces torn off.

They say that Carmen’s ghost is still on the rampage, hunting down anyone who doesn’t believe her story. According to the legend, Carmen will get you, whether it’s from a toilet, a shower, a sink or a drain. When you go to sleep, you’ll wake up in the sewer, in complete darkness, paralyzed, unable to move, hearing cackling laughter all around you. Then, as you scream in horror, Carmen will come and tear your face off.

So be careful who you bully, because you just might find yourself on the receiving end of the curse of Carmen Winstead.

It is hoped the star, called Kepler-22b, could prove a key to the ongoing quest to learn if life exists beyond Earth.

It is among 500 planets found to orbit stars beyond our solar system – and the smallest and the best-positioned to have liquid water on its surface.

San Jose State University astronomer Natalie Batalha, deputy science team lead for Nasa’s Kepler Space Telescope that discovered the star, said: “We are homing in on the true Earth-sized, habitable planets.”

And Douglas Hudgins, Kepler programme scientist at Nasa, said: “This is a major milestone on the road to finding Earth’s twin.”

The telescope, which was launched three years ago, is staring at about 150,000 stars in the constellations Cygnus and Lyra.

It looks for faint and periodic dimming as any circling planets pass by, relative to Kepler’s line of sight.

The results are used to assess how many of the stars in the Milky Way galaxy harbour potentially habitable, Earth-size planets.

Kepler-22b is the first such planet orbiting a Sun-like star discovered, scientists reported in findings to be published in The Astrophysical Journal .

A light year is the distance light travels in a year, about six trillion miles.

Planets about the same distance from their parent stars as Earth take roughly a year to complete an orbit.

Scientists want to see at least three transits to be able to rule out other explanations for fluctuations in a star’s light, such as small companion stars.

Results also are verified by ground and other space telescopes.

Kepler-22b, which is about 2.4 times the radius of Earth, sits squarely in its star’s so-called “habitable zone”, the region where liquid water could exist on the surface.

Scientists say that if the planet has a surface and a cushion of atmosphere similar to Earth’s, it would be about 72F (22C), about the same as a spring day in Earth’s temperate zone.

Officers spent three days with Spanish colleagues in Barcelona last month discussing the girl’s disappearance across the border in Portugal.

The Metropolitan Police force has said there will be no limits in its re-examination of the search.

Madeleine was nearly four when she went missing from her family’s holiday flat in Praia da Luz in the Algarve on May 3 2007 as her parents Kate and Gerry dined with friends nearby.

Police have also travelled to Portugal three times in connection with the fresh review, the force said.

Detectives are unwilling to discuss what led officers to travel to Barcelona to meet Spanish police between November 23 and 25.

But a Scotland Yard spokesman said: “The review continues. There has been very good co-operation with Portuguese authorities and liaison will continue.”

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood, the senior investigating officer, was understood to be among a team of detectives who went on the trips. A total of 30 people are now working on the force’s Operation Grange.

The review prompted criticism when it was launched in May, with politicians expressing concerns that it would divert resources from other crime victims.

It was sparked after a request from Home Secretary Theresa May supported by Prime Minister David Cameron.

A survey of 270 rioters carried out by The London School of Economics (LSE) and The Guardian also found opportunism was a contributing factor.

But of those questioned, 85% said policing was an “important” or “very important” factor in why the riots happened.

It was second only to poverty, which saw 86% of rioters class it as one of the main causes of the four consecutive nights of unrest during the summer.

LSE appointed experts analysed 1.3 million words from first-person accounts of rioters who took part in the disturbances, as part of the project called Reading the Riots.

The research also included analysis of over two and half million riot-related tweets.

Although antipathy towards police was found to be the key force behind the riots which began on August 6 this year, the study revealed a complex mix of political, social and economic grievances also contributed to the unprecedented trouble.

According to the data, 80% of rioters said government policy was an “important” or “very important” cause of the riots, with unemployment scoring 79%, the shooting of Mark Duggan scoring 75% and social media – which is believed to have helped facilitate the spread of the trouble across the UK’s cities – scoring 74%.

Many of those questioned admitted opportunism, or a chance to get hold of “free stuff” spurred their involvement.

Others cited a sense of injustice, describing the riots as a chance to get back at police – some 70% of interviewees said they had been stopped and searched in the past year.

Those involved in the riots were mainly young males but from a cross-section of local communities, the study found.

Just under half of those interviewed in the study were students. Of those who were not in education and were of working age, 59% were unemployed.

Although half of those interviewed were black, people who took part in the disorder did not consider these “race riots”.

Poor parenting and gangs were also said to be an important cause of the trouble, which led to the deaths of five people and saw more than 4,000 arrested.

Analysts said the view that the police were “the biggest gang out there” was a reoccurring theme among rioters.

The riots broke out in Tottenham, north London, on August 6, following the fatal shooting by police of Mr Duggan, 29. It then spread to other parts of the capital and other English cities including Birmingham, Liverpool, Nottingham, Manchester and Salford.

But critics say sour relations between police and the public is an out-of-date excuse.

Andrew Gilligan, London editor of The Daily Telegraph, said: “Unlike in the 1980s, when there was genuine grounds for grievance between the community and the police in lots of inner-city areas, relations between the police and the community in places like Tottenham have improved greatly.

“I don’t think anyone can or should deny that. And I think a lot of the time this is just an excuse.

“Now, if people are complaining that they’re being stopped and searched, well, If they’re criminals and rioters perhaps they deserve to be stopped and searched.”

Severe weather warnings have been issued for most of Scotland as well as Northern Ireland and parts of Northern England.

They warn of sleet and snow showers and ice on untreated surfaces.

Up to 15cm of snow could fall on high ground, with 1-3cm on low-level inland areas.

Transport Scotland yesterday activated a full Multi-Agency Response Team (MART) involving all of its transport partners including rail, road and Strathclyde Police.

Scotland’s Transport Minister Keith Brown was in the control centre last night and will be there today to view preparations.

On Sunday Tayside Police dealt with several accidents in the Perth and Kinross area where cars left the road due to icy conditions while a number of roads in northern Scotland were affected by snow and ice.

Northern Constabulary reported a loss of 999 call service in the Rosehall area of Lairg in Sutherland, affecting 176 telephone lines.

It was thought to be due to the weather conditions.

Police have advised drivers to listen to their local weather forecast before setting out on their journey.

Assistant Chief Constable Allan Moffat, of Central Scotland Police and the Association of Chief Police Officers (Scotland), said: “I would ask people to remember that both damp and snow affected roads can hide the hidden danger of black ice, particularly in shaded areas.

“Our message is very much aimed at asking motorists to be aware of the dangers and travel with extra caution.”

The snow warnings come almost exactly one year after last year’s bout of wintry weather which saw many parts of the UK blanketed.

Appearing on Lorraine this morning, the hopeful who was voted out of the competition solely by the public vote, said she no longer holds a grudge against Tulisa who implied that Misha has been bullying the other contestants backstage.

“Forgiving is the thing that I have done. He added that the most daunting part of the show, was entering the jungle with people he didn’t know.

“That was terrifying,” he said. “I was just so paranoid that I was going to lose my mind and not have anyone to talk to. Thankfully, Mark was there feeling exactly the same.”

Continuing the pair’s on-screen bromance, runner-up Mark said: “There couldn’t be a better winner. He’s the nicest, kindest person.”

The final Bushtucker Trial for Mark and Dougie saw the pair sit down to a meal which took in such delicacies as live beachworms, king crickets with a vomit fruit dip, a kangaroo anus, cocktails of blended emu liver and cockroaches, raw fish eyes, and bush pig penises.

The penis, Dougie said, was the worst. “It tasted of pee and poo.”

Having announced that Antony Cotton had been voted out of the jungle earlier in the show, hosts Ant and Dec returned to the jungle to tell Fatima that she had become the latest celebrity to leave.

Asked how she felt to be out of the camp by the presenters, the star said: “I’m absolutely delighted. I’m delighted I was able to take part, it’s been an enormous journey for me and sharing it amongst new found friends, it’s been a pleasure.

The former javelin world champion also recalled the moment a cockroach crawled up her nose during a Bushtucker trial against Pat Sharpe.

Revealing how she felt about Antony, who she clashed with in the jungle, Fatima admitted that she actually “loves” the Coronation Street star.

She said: “I love Antony. I’ve grown to love him. He’s a good man but Antony is larger than life and yet I do feel sometimes he would like to skive from the washing up.”

Missing out on the chance to be in the final, the Coronation Street actor hugged his fellow camp mates Mark Wright and Dougie Poynter telling them he loved them before leaving the jungle for the very last time.

Speaking to presenters Ant and Dec following his departure from the camp, the actor revealed that he was gutted to leave because he really wanted to be in the final tomorrow.

He said: “I’m absolutely gutted! But I did what I could do and I’m surprised that i even lasted that long.”

Asked for his reasons for going into the jungle, Antony, whose conflict with Fatima has been well documented, said: “You can’t ever plan for it. Every part of it was emotional and exciting. But I’ve loved every moment of it.”

The head of the Financial Services Authority (FSA), Hector Sants, has told financial institutions to accelerate plans for a separation of the single currency area, Sky’s City editor Mark Kleinman has learned .

Senior excutives from Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds Banking Group, RBS, Santander UK and Standard Chartered were given the warning at a private meeting with the FSA boss.

Although the meeting was not specifically set to issue the warning, Mr Sants said the banks should run a wide range of stress tests as part of their contingency planning.

However, he stopped short of prescribing specific instructions or scenarios.

People close to the FSA told Kleinman that Sants’ warning was “the kind of contingency planning expected in a situation like this”.

The impact on different banks of a eurozone break-up would vary, depending on their exposures to sovereign debt of member countries.

Whereas Barclays holds billions of pounds worth of European government bonds, Santander UK and Standard Chartered have very little direct exposure.

While many of the major announcements around infrastructure and youth employment were already leaked in advance of the speech, there were some new measures unveiled.

The Chancellor said that the independent Office for Budget Responsibility has not forecast a recession. However, it did downgrade its economic growth forecasts for the fourth time during this coalition government.

In what resembled something of a mini-Budget, rather than a simple statement, there were measures announced that affect public sector workers, pensioners, motorists and commuters who use public transport.

Here’s a round-up of the main measures and who they affect:

Public sector workers

One of the most controversial announcements was that public sector pay will only rise by an average of 1% for two years after the current pay freeze ends in 2012.

There will also be a review into the possibility of variable pay rates for public sector jobs, depending on where those jobs are situated. In the Chancellor’s words, he wants to see whether “public sector pay can be made more responsive to local labour markets”.

And, tucked away on page 95 of the Office for Budget Responsibility’s Economic Forecast, is the news that 710,000 public sector jobs will be lost by 2017, compared to their March forecast of 400,000 jobs to go between 2011 and 2016.

Families

The child element of the Child Tax Credit will be uprated by the Consumer Prices Index measure of inflation, meaning it will rise by £135 a year from April 2012.

The number of two-year-olds receiving 15 hours’ free nursery care is to be doubled to cover an extra 130,000 children. This is to be focused on children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

People receiving benefits and tax credits

Most working age and disability benefits will be uprated in line with the Consumer Prices Index measure of inflation (currently 5.2%), from April 2012.

The disability elements of tax credits will also be uprated, but the couple and single parent elements of the Working Tax Credits will not be.

Motorists

The 3p fuel duty increase planned for January has been scrapped. There will be a 3p rise in August instead. In a small fillip for people living in the Humber, the Humber Bridge toll will be halved.

Pensioners and future pensioners

The State Pension age increase from 66 to 67 is to be brought forward to 2026, which the Chancellor says will save £59 billion.

The State Pension is still protected by the so-called triple lock. This means that the basic State Pension will rise by £5.30 to £107.45 a week from April 2012. The full couple rate for people whose entitlement is based on their spouse’s or civil partner’s pension will rise by £8.50 to £171.85 a week.

The Pension Credit is to rise to £142.70 a week for single pensioners and £217.90 a week for couples. The threshold for Savings Credit will be raised to £111.10 for single pensioners and £177.20 for couples. Both these measures come into effect in April 2012.

The Government has also signed a deal with two groups of UK pension funds to provide £20 billion of investment for the infrastructure projects they have earmarked.

People who want to buy a home

There was confirmation of the already announced mortgage indemnities to help 100,000 people struggling to buy homes (which we covered in this article).

And the ‘right to buy’, a flagship policy of the last Tory government, is to be ‘reinvigorated’ with discounts of 50% offered to current tenants of social housing. The Government claims that it will provide an additional affordable home for every one that is bought from the money raised by the sell-off.

However, the stamp duty exemption for first-time buyers will be scrapped on 24 March 2012 as it has been “ineffective”.

Young people

As widely trailed, the Government is to introduce the Youth Contract, £940 million-worth of support to help young people into employment. This will offer 160,000 wage incentives of £2,275 for private sector companies to employ young people.

Other key developments include a £50 million fund for a programme to help disadvantaged 16-17-year-olds and additional Jobcentre support for 18-24-year-olds.

And, finally, some good news for water customers in the South West of England

The Government is to subsidise South West Water customers so that their bills are cut by £50 a year.

Sperm samples placed beneath a laptop with a wireless internet connection for just four hours were found to have reduced motility and more DNA damage compared with other samples stored under the same conditions but away from the laptop.

The study, published in the journal Fertility and Sterility, collected sperm samples from 29 healthy men, aged 26 to 45. Each of the samples were then separated into two pots.

One set of samples was placed beneath a laptop connected to the internet via Wi-Fi as it downloaded information, while the other set was stored under identical conditions – including temperature – but away from the computer.

The researchers found that exposure to the laptop resulted in a significant decrease in sperm motility and a significant increase in DNA fragmentation.

Around 25 per cent of the sperm in samples exposed to the laptop stopped swimming compared with 14 per cent of those kept away from the computer.

Similarly around nine per cent of the sperm exposed to the laptop showed DNA damage compared with three per cent in the control samples.

The researchers, from Eastern Virginia Medical School and the Nascentis Centre for Reproductive Medicine in Cordoba, Argentina, suggest that the electromagnetic radiation, and not heat, given out by the laptop was the cause.

In the study, the laptop connected to Wi-FI emitted 7 – 15 times more electromagnetic radiation than background levels, they said.

“Our data suggest that the use of a laptop computer wirelessly connected to the internet and positioned near the male reproductive organs may decrease human sperm quality, they wrote.

“At present we do not know whether this effect is induced by all laptop computers connected by Wi-Fi to the internet or what conditions heighten this effect.”

The scientists concluded: “The mechanisms mediating the decrease in sperm motility and DNA integrity also need further study.”

In all truth it was a predictable night from the ‘X Factor’ studios that was only lifted by the presence of the Lloyd family, who were the real stars of the show as they appeared in the audience to help promote Together For Short Lives, the organisation that will benefit from this year’s charity single.

Janet was odds-on favourite to exit after forgetting her words on Saturday night’s show, and the writing was on the wall for the youngster from Northern Ireland when the results of the public vote revealed she was in the bottom two alongside perennial survival singer Misha B.

Amidst the usual procession of glitz, glamour and rapidly intercut backstage footage that makes up the Sunday night show, Louis Walsh gave a glimpse of what might be to come for Janet by saying:

“We’re two weeks away from the final and she totally messed it up.”

It was a statement echoed by fans online who widely slammed the flame-haired starlet for forgetting the words to the annoyingly catchy Hanson whine ‘Mmm Bop’. But perhaps we’re being too hard on the 17 year-old. After all when I was that age I could barely muster a monosyllabic grunt in polite company, let alone the courage to perform on stage in front of millions of people.

Nevertheless perhaps Janet’s crime was not a momentary lapse in memory, but a dramatic tail off in the quality of her performances over recent weeks. Her best bits montage at the end of the episode reminded us of just how strongly Janet had started the competition, and she re-captured some of that sparkle with a performance of Snow Patrol’s ‘Chasing Cars’ as she sang for her survival.

She was followed by Misha B – who must be running out of survival songs by now – as she belted out a typically accomplished performance of Irene Cara’s ‘Out Here On My Own’. Both girls were superb but in the end only one could make it through to the semi-final and there were few surprises when Dermot O’Leary turned to the judges to decide on who’d be leaving the competition.

First up was Louis Walsh who said:

“It’s getting tougher and tougher every week…But taking everything into consideration, judging on last night’s two performances, the sing-off tonight and the person who I think can bring the most to the competition; tonight the act I’m sending home is Janet.”

Tulissa then followed suit, re-iterating the now familiar Sunday night spiel about Misha B, saying:

“I am going to base these performances on who has the most potential, who will sell records and sell out arenas. The act I am sending home is Janet.”

Dermot O’Leary – whose name has become increasingly apt given his penchant for stage routines with scantily clad dancers – made it clear that Kelly had to make a decision or else majority would rule and Janet would leave the show. In spite of the consequences the girls’ mentor, who said she was feeling “sick” at the thought of making a decision, abstained. She added:

“I just know how great these two young ladies are, I have watched them grow and seen how hard they worked. Janet I admire you as a musician and I absolutely love you and adore you… Misha you just want it so bad and I can’t make the decision, I love these girls.”

And so that was that. Janet looked upset, but took the decision with good grace saying: “I am obviously very confused. I just can’t wait to get out of the show and just start getting my music out.” Kelly then reminded us that even though she was leaving the show her act still had a bright future ahead of her, she said: “Janet will be a recording star. She has such a unique voice and a beautiful gift and everyone needs to keep a lookout for this girl. She’s a star.”

A mother expecting twin boys was told by doctors one of the babies had a serious congenital heart defect and she decided to have him aborted.

However surgeons on Tuesday accidentally terminated the healthy twin.

The sick twin then also died, reportedly after an emergency caesarean section operation.

The Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne would not confirm details, but said in a statement: “The Royal Women’s Hospital can confirm a distressing clinical accident occurred on Tuesday.

“This is a terrible tragedy and the hospital is deeply sorry for the loss suffered by the patient and her family. We are conducting a full investigation and continue to offer the family and affected staff every support.”

The Herald Sun newspaper reported a close friend of the mother said: “She went to hospital with two babies and now she has none.

“And she had the heartache of giving birth to her sick baby. She’s traumatised.”

According to reports the woman’s husband, a nurse, a doctor and the ultrasound clinician, who was apparently inconsolable because of the mistake, were in the operating room at the time of the procedure.

The family is said to be struggling to comprehend how the tragedy happened and is now considering legal action.
